The First Line Game

You’ve read a lot of books, right? Did they have a memorable opening? Do you think you could recognize a book just by it’s first line? Try these ones:

Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show..

I am always drawn back to the places where I have lived, the houses and their neighborhoods.

George is my name; my deeds have been heard of in Tower Hall, and my childhood has been chronicled in the Journal of Experimental Psychology.

“To be born again ” sang Gibreel Farishta tumbling from the heavens, “first you have to die.”

Dying’s not so bad. At least I won’t have to answer the telephone.

Find out the answers – ahem – I mean, confirm that you were correct at First Lines, one of the funner experiments happening at Cornell University.

Without looking I’m going to say that the first is David Copperfield and the fourth is Satanic Verses.

Woohoo! I was right. I’ve never read the other books quoted.
